As a psychiatrist, it is my honor and privilege to have the opportunity to practice empathy daily. In the setting of a psychiatric consultative sessions, people share their most revealing secrets, fears, and hopes. It is a very humbling experience and makes me appreciate the fact that all of us suffer in some fashion or another. This suffering and how we help each other through the suffering is what binds us together in our community and in our humanity.
